LUCIDcontracting’s 7 steps to a premium roofing system...

We have developed the following high performing premium roof system for our clients. This weatherproof and long lasting system consists of the following components:

1. Premium Architectural Shingles
Architectural Shingles - 40 Year Warranty
The roof covering of choice for LUCIDcontracting is the Architectural 40 year shingle.

Priced only marginally above the traditional 3 tab 25 year shingle, the increased performance of the architectural shingle clearly makes it the highest value option for clients. This shingle has elegant styling and built in protection due to its added thickness from a double layer of fibreglass mat and sturdy modified sealant. The angled cut and classic styling resemble a wood shake, these shingles have a much better appearance and do a excellent job hiding most imperfections in the roof sheathing. The architectural shingles also deliver superior performance compared to a traditional 3 tab shingle as they do not have two cuts in the middle which helps to minimize the likelihood that ice, snow or water can penetrate underneath the shingle.

Though LUCIDcontracting highly recommends the Architectural 40 year shingle, we will happily provide a quote using traditional 3 tab 25 year warranty shingles.

2. Structurally Sound Wood Sheathing
The wood sheathing under the shingle is the foundation for your whole roofing system. The roof deck should be clean, dry, flat, smooth and securely nailed to the trusses which allows it to perform key functions such as provide structural support, dimensional stability, hold uniform loads such as heavy snow, provide resistance to wind force and act as a solid anchor for roofing nails. Making sure the wood sheathing under the shingles is structurally sound and free from damage, rot, soft spots and major unevenness is a critical starting point to laying new shingles.  LUCIDcontracting will ensure your roof deck is inspected for any issues prior laying new shingles and will replace any sheets that are required.
3. Adequate Use of Ice and Water Shield
The most common areas for roof failure and water leakage in a roof system are along the eaves and in the valleys. To better protect these vulnerable areas, a high quality ice & water shield should be installed. Lucid contracting installs a premium grade high performance self adhering asphalt based membrane 6 feet wide along all eaves and 3 feet wide in all valley locations to ensure your home has extra protection in event of ice damming, severe freeze/thaw cycles or excessive wind driven rain.
4. Underlayment
Shingle underlayment is not mandated by the Ontario building Code and so is not typically installed in new home construction. Shingle underlayment is an integral part of our premium roofing system. Underlayment not only acts as a secondary protection against wind driven rain, and as protection from moisture prior to shingle installation, but also allows the roof to achieve a higher fire resistance rating.

LUCIDcontracting installs a premium 15 pound felt underlayment to all exposed roof sheathing that is not protected by our ice & water membrane.

5. High Flow Ventilation
Ventilation is a key component of our premium roofing system. Regardless of the shingle quality used, improper ventilation can lead to accelerated deterioration of both shingles and wood sheathing. Adequate ventilation creates a cooler attic in the summer and drier attic in the winter. Ventilation in your attic requires airflow in through the soffits at and out through the roof vents. There must be an appropriate number of vents (approximately 1 per 300 square feet of roof) and appropriate airflow per vent.

LUCIDcontracting will verify that your soffit vents allow sufficient air flow to enter your homes attic, and will install premium high flow Venmar 60300 roof vents to draw the air out. These vents outperform standard cap vents given that they allow for a larger volume of air to escape and their increased height prevent them from being buried with snow.

6. Drip Edges
For efficient water shedding at the roof edges, a metal drip edge will be installed. The purpose of the drip edge is to facilitate proper water drainage as it allows for the water to drain directly into the gutters at the eaves and cleanly off the shingles along the rake edges which prevents the shingles from curling up and keeps the water runoff away from the house itself.
7. Valleys, Flashing & Caulking
A Valley is where two roof fields join together to make an inward angle on your roof and are a common area for roof failure (leakage).  To ensure sufficient protection in the valleys, LUCIDcontracting installs a 3 foot wide strip of our premium ice & water membrane over the wood decking followed by a new heavy gauge powder coated metal valley to allow water to run off with ease.

Metal Flashings are installed on all chimneys and second floor walls.  Given that these flashings are installed vertically, they typically remain in very good condition and outlast the shingles. LUCIDcontracting will inspect all flashing and only replace as required.

LUCIDcontracting uses a premium weatherproof caulking to seal all flashings, cover exposed nail heads and as needed to ensure a water tight roof system.
